European foam industry safety label sets global standard

Following the success in Europe of the CertiPUR safety, health and environment (SHE) standard for polyurethane foam introduced by EUROPUR in 2005, the US foam association, the Polyurethane Foam Association (PFA) has announced the launch of its own label – CertiPUR-US – for early 2008.

Since its introduction over two years ago at the Milan Furniture Fair, the European CertiPUR scheme has attracted 30 foam manufacturers, with several more in the pipeline. Companies across Europe have become accredited under the scheme and the label has become recognised by furniture producers as representing responsible production and consumer safety.

The flexible polyurethane foams covered by the CertiPUR scheme are used for bedding and in upholstered furniture, for example car seats, furniture, and mattresses. The CertiPUR application process is rigorous with testing carried out by accredited independent laboratories. EUROPUR Secretary General Hubert Creyf said “They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery and CertiPUR is certainly setting the example worldwide. With 30 companies now on board, the benefits of accreditation for foam manufacturers are convincing.”

EUROPUR also launched its new website today, with an in-depth section on CertiPUR.
